UCAS

The University College and Admissions Service is the system by which all students apply to universities. There are over 36,000 courses to choose from and over 300 universities in the UK. The UCAS site is not only used to make your application to University, but is a great tool to use for information, advice and guidance for you (and your parents) to discover the wide range of Universities, courses, funding and further opportunities available beyond University.

The application process starts in Year 12 when students at Scarborough UTC are given preparation sessions on how to search and apply for their chosen courses. Each student has five choices and students must prepare a 4,000-character personal statement explaining why they are academically suited to their course choice option. The Sixth Form Tutors will support you with this process.

There is plenty of support for parents too. You can sign up to monthly parent newsletters quickly and simply online. They’re completely FREE and contain timely information and advice about your son or daughter’s journey to higher education and what you can do to support them.
For further information about the UCAS process, take a look at the advice for parents and guardians on ucas.com.

Here at Scarborough UTC we have strong links with The University of Hull and regularly engage with other Universities to ensure that students have an aspirational experience.
To apply for a Degree Apprenticeship you will usually apply directly to the company that is sponsoring the degree.

Degree Apprenticeships

What are Degree Apprenticeships?

Degree apprenticeships combine work with a leading company or organisation and completing a degree. The company pays you a salary and also pays the university tuition fees. At the end of the programme, you have industry experience and a degree. The Student Ladder website gives an excellent overview.

Who would it suit?

If your career path and intended area of study are closely related then it might suit you. Engineering, computing, finance, accounting, advertising, computing, television production are some of the fields where degree apprenticeships are offered. These are a growing field and many people are now looking to train and work so that their employability skills are increased.

How are applications made and what are the entry requirements?

Applications are made with individual companies and organisations online. A-level grades ranging from ABB to CCC are a common academic requirement. Phone interviews, face to face interviews and psychometric testing can form part of the process.

How does this relate to UCAS applications?

These programmes are completely independent of UCAS. You can apply for a normal university place through UCAS and additionally apply for any number of degree apprenticeships. You can then choose which path you want to follow.
