CAREERS INFORMATION ADVICE AND GUIDANCE (CIAG) @ SCARBOROUGH UTC

business-g87072cb0a_1920

Scarborough UTC provides all students with access to high quality, impartial CIAG to enable our students to make successful and informed decisions about their post 16 and 18 education and career pathways.  We aim for 100% of our Year 11 and Year 13 students to progress onto appropriate and exciting destinations when they leave us, which has been achieved every year since SUTC opened.

Employers and Universities

Our employer partners and University partner, also including our close neighbours at CU Scarborough, are proactively involved in the delivery of our CIAG programme. A key priority is for our students to understand the huge range of career opportunities that exist locally, nationally and globally, particularly (although not exclusively) within the Engineering, Health and Cybersecurity sectors.  Our employer and University partners are experts in their fields, making them well-placed to provide our students with the information they need concerning career pathways with them and within the wider sectors they serve.

Impartiality

As well as promoting opportunities with our employer and University partners, SUTC is committed to providing students with information about options available to them for employment and education beyond our own sixth form. In order to ensure this, each student has the opportunity to attend an annual careers meeting with an independent careers adviser.

Careers Activities

CAREERS FAIRS

A bi-annual careers fair is held involving our employer partners and local institutions. All year groups are given time to review information presented at organisation stands, and talk to representatives. Younger students are given a challenge investigation task to complete during the session.

MOCK INTERVIEWS

Mock interviews take place throughout the year for all year groups. Local employer partners and institutions are invited to a session where each student is given a 1:1 mock interview; students then receive feedback from employers that informs their performance and identifies areas of development.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Each student in Y10-Y13 undertakes an annual week long work experience placement. Student placements can be sourced by students, with many being placed with our employer partners.

EMPLOYER OF THE MONTH

Each month an employer of focus is identified. During that month the employer presents a whole school assembly to raise student awareness of their business/product and the career opportunities they can offer. In addition, information about the employer is displayed on electronic displays in open areas throughout the building.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Career Development Programme is offered to students in Y12. Each year employers offer to support a student/number of students throughout their typically two-year sixth form experience through mentoring sessions, industrial visits, technical masterclasses and work experience placements. Students complete an application form to join the programme which is reviewed by the employer/s they apply to. The employer decides on which students they wish to interview then students are offered a place based on the outcome of this interview.

The CDP has seen great success with students being offered bespoke support and programmes from our employer partners, resulting in successful appointment to apprenticeship programmes.
