Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Engineering – Extended Certificate

AQA Exam Board

Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies

Learners will cover six topics, some are examined and at least one will be tutor-assessed. All learners have to take units1, 2, 3 and 4 to enable the learner to demonstrate their understanding of the underpinning mathematical, scientific, mechanical and electrical/electronic principles, which form the foundation of engineering. Learners then undertake mechanical design and then choose an optional unit from either electrical and electronic design or Computer AidedDesign CAD and business for engineering. This will increase the depth and breadth of their skills and knowledge. This qualification will also enable learners to develop other desirable skills.Equivalent to1 A level

The Extended Certificate is assessed using a combination of:

  • external assessment, which we set and mark
  • internal assessment, where the tutor assesses the learners’ work and we externally moderate it.

Maths for engineering, science for engineering and mechanical design are taught in year 12. Principles of mechanical and electrical along with an optional unit is taught in year 13. Units 1-4 are externally assessed examinations sat in the May of year 12 and 13.

Entry Criteria

Grade 5 in Maths and English
